The National Stock Exchange of Australia and Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) are Australia’s main Stock Exchanges. While ASX is much larger with bigger companies, NSX is more flexible, and provides a listing which is cheaper, faster, less bureaucratic and more convenient when there are large numbers of non-Australian shareholders. NSX allows listing of shares in Australian companies and Australian Depository Interests for Non-Australian companies. Australian Depository Interests (CDI) are certificates representing an underlying foreign share. Companies listing on NSX (whether Australian or non-Australian) may compliance list (which means they will not be raising share capital when they list) or IPO list which involves raising capital on listing (an IPO). Any listing may be for a company which owns a business or assets, or a company which will acquire a business or assets on listing. All listing companies must have at least A$500,000 of net assets. Therefore a company which seeks a compliance listing may need an underwriter for up to A$500,000 or will itself have liquid assets of A$500,000.
